Hydrothermal Materials Testing for Extreme Environments

We reproduce downhole geothermal environments up to extreme temperature (200-800°C) and pressure (3 to >30kpsi) conditions to evaluate the performance of cements, alloys, elastomers, ceramics, drilling components, and geothermal materials.

Our innovative experimental setups are designed to accurately replicate geothermal conditions, providing valuable data on alteration of casing, cement, drilling components and source rock that drives advancements in energy extraction technologies.

We offer:
  • Long-duration testing

  • Steam exposure tests

  • Supercritical fluid exposure tests

  • Corrosion and scaling testing

Casement / Cement Tests
Materials We Test
Our experimental design enables clients to test a wide range of materials including:

Well cement
Coatings
Casing
Drill bits
Elastomers
O-rings
Ceramics
Metals
Superalloys
Rock cores
Composite materials

We are able to test beyond this list and are always open to discussion.
Typical Questions We Can Help Answer
Can your cement survive 400°C?
Will your elastomer swell?
How quickly does your alloy corrode?
Will thermal cycling crack your ceramic?
Does your coating delaminate?
How does permeability change?
How do reaction products evolve?
See some experimental designs for testing drilling components and grout.
Materials Characterization and Analytics
We conduct extensive analysis of material (rock or metal) degradation or alteration under geothermal (high temperature and pressure) conditions, allowing us to improve the longevity and performance of drilling components in real-world applications.

  • Petrography of rocks and cements
  • Chemical characterization via Scanning Electron Microscopy, Electron Microprobe
  • Lattice structure of minerals and metals via Electron Backscatter Diffraction and X-Ray Diffraction
  • Mass change
  • Fracture analysis via X-ray computed tomography
Please find detailed information about the analytical apparatuses here.
Interpretation and Modeling
Interpretation Services
As part of the experimental services, we provide interpretation of chemical datasets and structural (i.e., fracture) datasets obtained from experimental charges and comparisons with conventional models.
High Temperature Design
High temperature problem? With a combined 30 years of experience designing experimental apparatus to tackle challenging questions in rock mechanics, chemical mobility in fluids and magmatism, we can help you solve it.
